Despite cyber-space's apparent objection to my post, I may have finally successfully managed to type. Take that, cyber-space! I had to restart my frozen crappy laptop FOUR times! I was unable to use the mouse and had to jerkily guide my finger over the little screen pad thingie instead. And I could not read my bloggy friend's blogs for inspiration. Despite all these things, I am here.
Unfortunately...I ain't got a lot to say. It just feels good to sit OUTSIDE on my porch, sipping coffee and enjoying nature while my computer freezes up. For Christmas, I requested a bird book, because the woods surrounding our apartment are inundated with the little critters. I am aware that I haven't reached the proper age to be a "birder" - I think being a senior citizen is a requirement - but I thought it might be nice and peaceful to sit quietly in the woods and watch/learn about the birds. Unfortunately, birds are not as crazy about being observed as I had hoped. And birding is not overly easy for someone who left her camera in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago. I look at a bird perched on the roof of my downstairs neighbor's den, and I try to memorize his (or her) markings before he (or she) flits away. I have no idea which section of my book to turn to, though I am confident that it is not an owl, hawk, or eagle (I am such a genius). It could be a warbler or sparrow....sigh.
So you see what I mean. I have resorted to birding as an appropriate blog topic. I promise, I will try to do better.
.........Once my computer decides to cooperate!

Time Warp
Sorry, folks. I have been cheating. Due to a combination of laziness, busy-ness, sickly-ness, and weariness, I fell behind in my blogging. There was no lack of material. In fact, I still have a few blog ideas to type up. But for now, please enjoy some of my newest entries, which have been belatedly posted to their correct chronological position. (It is so cool how blogger lets me go back in time!)
January 24, January 30, and January 31 have officially happened, and I now return you to your regularly scheduled day.

Doing This and That
First, this:
I would like to welcome my cousin's NEW BABY to the family!! I love reading "Mommy Blogs" - like Land of Bean, Baby On Bored, and Maternal Mirth, just to name a few. Hint, hint!
Now that:
I return once again to a favorite topic: blogging about why I haven't been blogging. In general, holidays (and visits from friends/family, and parties) tend to inflict upon me a"disease of motivation". For instance, to prep for my annual "Tour de PA" as I like to call it, I had to:
1. Go to work and finish project before leaving at noon.
2. Wrap presents.
3. Pack clothes into suitcase.
4. Bake pie.
I'll leave this to you, Constant Reader: One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong. But nonetheless, it was my plan. It came about quite innocently - my grandmother gave me a peck of apples at Thanksgiving. For those unfamiliar, a peck is actually a **itload of apples. I made two pies and apple crisp, yet there were still enough apples to make another pie. But I did not think they would last until I returned. So in my own little world, baking a pie made sense. But this odd choice of tasks is common. In years past, I have:
1. Cooked 20 mini loaves of sweet breads complete with cute little labels for family and friends. I made the loaves not just for family I knew I would see, but also for family I might see.
2. Went to Harry and Davids at the mall on Christmas Eve to buy their awesome pears so they would be perfectly ripe on Christmas Day.
3. Purchased cards and little ornaments for everyone in the office.
4. Made sugar cookies for my friend's annual cookie exchange - and made 4 colors of icing and decorated each of the six dozen cookies by hand.
5. Cleaned the bathrooms, and tidied the living room, then began dusting each and every crevice, including behind the microwave, fridge, and stove, and cleaned out the refrigerator, and forgetting to change and shower before guests arrive.
The list goes on, but hopefully you see the point. My brain begins thinking of practical, even necessary preparations, and then goes into hyper- over- drive and tells me the car floor mats and car interior MUST be clean by the time of the event. I have been suffering this disease for most of December, but thankfully, it is out of my system.
The worst part is that usually my preparations go like this:
1. Try very hard to finish project at work, but realize that I must ask someone else to finish it while I am away, and end up staying to write detailed email and organize the file until 1pm.
2. Begin to wrap presents and then realize that one present is not in the bag, though it says I paid for it on the receipt. Travel back to store on Christmas Eve, fight to get into parking lot, fight for parking space, stand in line for 45 minutes, get gift replaced (this was the easy part), fight to pull out of parking space, fight to leave lot, and return home.
3. Begin packing after my ride has arrived. Throw random pieces of clothing into bag as they wait in their winter jackets, and hope for the best. (I had to do laundry at Adam's mom's house...)
4. Bake nothing. Throw out rotten apples promptly upon return.
Luckily, I am home. Luckily, I have nothing to do...except pick up my parents, cousins, and uncle from their Rose Bowl travels. Maybe they would like a pie when they get here...

Blog of the Day
You may have noticed that one of my comments on my last post was removed by yours truly. I was excited to see a comment from a new person, but sadly, "Aimee" turned out to be a link to coupons for NY and Company. I think this is like making flirty eyes with a hottie at a bar all night only to find out he wants your friend's number.
However, I should thank this anonymous user who has toyed so ungraciously with my heart. Because of her, I had to figure out how delete comments (uhh, yeah..turns out that is the little trash can that shows up next to the comment...in my own defense, it looks a LOT like a hairbrush or a seashell.) While searching for this information, I found tons of things I can add to my blog!
A few that come to mind:
"Of the Day" series:
- Quote of the day
- Spock quote of the day
- Trump quote of the day (ick)
- Painting of the day (your choice of Picasso, Dahli, van Gough, etc, etc, etc)
- NASA picture of the day
- sunset of the day
- joke of the day
- today in history
"Tools" series:
-Wikipedia
-Dictionary
-Spell checker
-Thesauras (guess a spell checker might come in handy)
-Calorie Counter
-Exercise Tips (also available in the "of the day" series...)
-Weather
-the Periodic Table (wha??)
There are also games, sports updates, stock market updates, links, "Make a Wish" icons, and something called a "Woot! Watcher". The description clarifies: "Never miss a Woot! again. This gadget will show you the Woot! of the day, or will allow you to track Woot-Off in progress." Yeah. Crystal clear.
So you may notice that other than a list of blogs I follow and those who follow me (which I have been meaning to add for some time now), I did not add anything. Ever heard of sensory overload? It is just too much. Can't. Handle. Too many. Gargh.

Excuses and Muses
I have not blogged in a week. I have several excuses prepared, so please choose the one you like best:
1. The computer had some sort of problem. Adam (a computer programmer) explained the problem to me thusly: HE - The power supply blah, blahblah, blah blah blah blah, I think the garbage needs taking out and blah blah blah blah, don't I look good in my polo shirt? ME - I see. So does it work now? HE - Yes. ME - Cool. I'm going to take the garbage out.
2. We got a Wii. Our new bundle of joy! (Mom - that is funny, see, because Wii's tend to be sold in "bundles" with a bunch of accessories and games. Aren't I clever?)
3. I had, umm, stuff to do. At least I am pretty sure I did. I didn't play the Wii for hours every night, I swear. Grrr. I thought I had more excuses lined up.
OK, so I am sure you are on the edge of your seat, wondering what new and interesting things I have thought up to say. These are a few of the things that have been on my mind of late:
1. Bikram Yoga is still evil. Tiff and I went a second time, and she nearly threw up during class. Those who know me are aware that such a statement would be fairly normal for me - in fact, a session of physical activity without nausea is more worth mentioning. But this is far more rare in my sister. Hence, Bikram is evil.
2. Brunch at Jesse Wong's Kitchen in Hunt Valley, MD. Oh, the pounds I gained. They had 20 different desserts. Literally. Alas, I was unable to try them all, because they had an equally extensive selection of egg rolls, stir fries, dumplings, and sushi. I gave it my all, and they kept bringing more. Plus unlimited mimosas and champagne. Fine. It is not "brunch" in the Perkins sort of way. Let's just call it heaven and leave it at that.
3. Despite my splurge at Jesse's, I am almost on track with the diet-exercise thing we are all supposed to be doing. The spreadsheet is no more. I have graduated to the next level - I add my calories for each day and log the final number in my daily planner. I attempted skipping this level, and going to "watching what I eat", but found myself at Jesse Wong's. So it's back to tracking. I have not returned to my daily walks at lunch time. Someday...
4. The Wii is so much fun! But as I attempt to download the old Mario 64 that I played in college, and the machine tells me that I need the "classic controller" for this game, I realize: this is going to get expensive. As a kid, I had a Cabbage Patch doll, and each Christmas, I asked for all the Cabbage Patch accessories - the playpen, the stroller, the high chair...actually, this is sounding a bit like my friend's baby registry. You get the picture. I never got any of these things. But now, I am an adult, and if Mama wants a classic controller, Mama's gonna get it. It was $19.49 at Wal-Mart. They did not have Mario Cart. Guess what Mama's gettin' next time?
5. New thought - I almost retyped Wal-Mart and wrote Target. I am such a hypocrite sometimes. I know Wal-Mart is supposedly evil and they don't pay their employees well and they are driving all our manufacturers to China. I am embarrassed to admit that we went to Wal-Mart to buy our Wii accessories. But we did. They have these delicious non-frozen pizzas...
6. OK, this is to redeem myself: I resolved recently to carry cash so that I will have money to give the Girl Scouts. I have refused to buy cookies from at least three girls in the last week because I don't have any money. Or perhaps the Girl Scouts can begin taking credit cards? Ditto for the Salvation Army Santas?

Is there anybody OUT there?
Good news readers, I am back. More about that in my next post. But what I am wondering is, are there any readers out there? I thought my last entry might merit a comment*, but alas, I suppose I find myself more amusing than I actually am. Just a bit bummed, I suppose.
My cousin Jamie sent me a text that may bring a few of you out of the woodwork. She asked how she could comment without getting a gmail account, and I found a setting for that!! So now everyone can add their witticisms and praise! And, Jamie did make her comment. It's a pretty good one, but on an older post - click here. Thanks Jame!
BTW - thanks ever so much to my regular commenters, Cara, Mel, Danielle, Tiff, and Liz. Now, on to the blogging...because I guess in all fairness, a few of you may be wondering...

Mini-Me
I have oft admired the profile pictures of my fellow bloggers. However, I have noted that few people choose a boring old picture of themselves. Apparently, this approach would be rather uninspired. To name a few - Mel uses a picture of the Fraggle of the same name, and Maureen (who is living in New Zealand) uses the New Zealand flag. Danielle uses a picture of an eye. (I am most jealous that she thought of this before I did!) At my cousin Shanon's wedding, Adam was kind enough to take a picture of me, smiling with my other cousin Jamie. He took forever to take the photo, and we were both holding our smile for way longer than we should. Then, the smart-ass shows us the pic:
This is me. A bit too close for my liking.
Anyway, Carabee comes closest to a picture of herself, but she uses a baby picture. Perhaps a clever commentary - her blog is most often about her baby, but focuses on how she is experienceing the world (of parenting) for the first time just as she did when the picture was taken. Or maybe she just likes the photo. I don't know.
Point being, I needed likeness to represent. So today I went to South Park Studio and created my own little me. Aren't I cute?

Happiness is...
I guess there is hope for me yet, as I was rudely interrupted from blogging by Real Life. Frankly, I sometimes prefer the blogging. Adam and I took an impromptu vacation to his hometown in Pennsyltuckey (we are both Pennsyltuckians though our hometowns are 350 miles apart...) I wish we left under happier circumstances, but the reason for our trip was to say goodbye to Adam's grandfather, Cliff.
A large part of me is glad to know that Cliff is no longer suffering, for his last few weeks of life were no picnic. I keep typing and re-typing this paragraph, trying to figure out what it is I want to say. Much of me feels that I am not qualified to say anything, having only known Cliff for a relatively short time. Yet I know this man had a profound impact on someone I love most in the world, and I feel some sort of tribute is warranted. All I can think to write about is the last time I visited Cliff at his house, shortly before Christmas.
He was in good spirits that day, probably because he was happy to see Adam. He was able to walk fairly well, despite losing a toe to diabetes a few months before, and he did not need to use his ventilator. He showed off his newest gadget - a recliner with an electric lift - and joked in a subtle way quite reminiscent of his grandson's mannerisms. I do not remember much of the conversation, only that he fixed us coffee and cookies - complete with serving trays. He made this little snack with a great deal of enthusiasm. I think he was glad to be able to perform any task at that time, no matter how trivial.
I know that the last few months were hard on him. He suffered much, and hung around as long as possible. I think of that last visit and know that he was truly happy on that day, simply appreciating that he felt well, and was surrounded by people he loved. I only hope to live by this example, and realize that happiness is a state of mind which can be cultivated in any circumstance.

Addicted
Cara may have created a monster. Oh sure, I have heard the stories about "blog addiction" but like most people, I thought, "It won't happen to me." I have always thought of the computer as a tool - a necessary item to use when I have to bring work from home, or check directions to a friend's place. I only occasionally used it for leisure, and then only to do some crossword puzzles or sudoku. Now, I turn on this same computer and become immersed for hours in the world of blogs, and often forget my original mission. Earlier in the week I thought, "I can quit at any time." And I can. I think. I am not as certain as I once was.
Since I have been so busy blogging about blogging, I bet you are wondering how the 'ole diet is going. For that, I did manage to drag myself out of the blogosphere (that's what they call it). I updated my spreadsheet, trying to sort through my hazy memory in order to determine exactly how many beers, chips, mozzarella-tomato thingies, and glasses of wine I had last night. My slight headache and gorilla breath indicate that it could be a few more glasses than I might like to admit. And then there was the cheesecake. I had been forewarned of this fabulous concoction, because my friend is actually considering marketing it. Anne, I think you have a winner, as I would definitely pay money to eat your cheesecake again. Luckily, I don't have to - there's more in the fridge!
But sigh....once again, the diet goal has not been reached. So close! Yet so far away. At least the glass is half-full, though. I got back to the gym, and after the storm on Wednesday night, we had three days of gorgeous weather so I took the mountain bike out. I had hoped this trend would continue a few more days, but alas, I am currently typing on my porch and sweating like a really sweaty thing. (Forgive me, I just want to go inside to my air conditioning now.)
Hopefully I can redeem myself from my shameful addiction to baked goods this week. Did I mention there's more cheesecake in the fridge??
Sigh.

Warning - Many Hyperlinks!
My blog - guru Carabee, curator of "Land of Bean", has "tagged" me. Once again, my shameful newness to this not-so-new world of blogging becomes painfully evident. As directed, I visited her site (which I was totally about to do anyway, as it is part of my computer routine). Apparently, this is sort of like chain mail** and is a way to a) get more people to read your blog, and b) tell your current readers about new blogs. Honestly, I am a little gun-shy about both of these things. Many folks tell me they enjoy my blog, but they are usually related to me, or drinking a lot of beer with me (or both). I fear telling complete strangers to check out my blog. Also, I read only two blogs religiously: Cara's blog, and Jennsylvania, which is done by a "professional blogger" who already has a ton of readers (she gets like 500 comments on average, and would be unlikely to participate in said tagging.) It turns out I am very picky about blogs, and have found a few I like (Cara tagged another one, Blah Blah BLOG). However, there are MANY blogs which do not interest me. Despite this, I did some (eek! 4 hour!) research to find bloggers worthy of being tagged. I am sure there are more.
So, without further ado, the rules:
1. Link the person who tagged you
2. Mention the rules on your blog
3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours…
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking them…
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged.
Parts 1 & 2 are easy. I link to Cara's site all the time, and I am equipped with many quirks. Here are six I thought of most readily - how this is going to get more people to read my blog is beyond me:
#1 - I have always liked well-starched sheets. This is because I like to fold the sheet and rub the base of my fingernail against the sharp edge. I especially like it when the skin has pulled away for some reason or another. Is this too weird?? Perhaps this quirk is too quirky…
#2 - Some people enjoy fresh fruit or sugar on their cereal. I enjoy those things, but for an extra-special (high calorie) treat, I like peanut butter on Cheerios. Do not knock it until you’ve tried it.
#3 - I HATE reality TV. Because it is the only thing on (I also do not get cable), I have been watching “Last Comic Standing” and “America’s Got Talent” on occasion. Can I just watch an hour of comedians doing standup?? Please? Why do I need to know the back story about how they all get along living in a house together? Ironically, while researching for part 4 of “the rules”, I found a convincing blog entry on “How Reality TV Can Make You a Better Person”. The best part for me is that others have endured the reality TV, and imparted the lessons in this concise article.
#4 - As a child, I ate the following items: Lebanon baloney, bread, cereal, blueberry yogurt, spaghetti without sauce (but with Parmesan), most fruits except pears and plums, carrots, and corn, peanut butter and jelly. Nothing else. I was a joy, and my mom carried an “emergency” PB&J in her purse in case we had to eat at some exotic place like McDonalds.
#5 - Many girls my age developed crushes on actors like Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, and Johnny Depp. I liked all of them, but I also had huge crushes on…I am still almost too embarrassed to say it….Dana Carvey and Alan Alda (in his MASH) years. I can only justify this by the fact that Adam very faintly resembles Dana Carvey….I cannot explain my love for Alan Alda other than to say that it was more a love for Hawkeye Pierce - a fun loving, yet smart guy.
#6 - When I get stuck on a problem, I have to pee. I guess it started as a way to procrastinate when I was supposed to be doing homework, but it is accompanied with, well, you know what it feels like when you have to pee. When I have a tough detail to figure out at work, I may frequent the bathroom as much as 4 times an hour.
And now, the blogs I found which were actually worth reading. (There are MANY in other languages, or dedicated to pictures of family members, or full of grammatical errors/religious righteousness. I found the most effective way to search was to click on the links in my profile under "Interests". It is amazing the diversity one may find, despite using a common interest to start the search.)
1. The Wind in Your Vagina - Ironically written by a stay at home Dad, better known in his blog as "Black Hockey Jesus".
2. The Ginger Files - I was originally drawn to her by the Fraggle she uses as a self photo. She loves Reality TV, but I think we could still be friends. I also enjoyed many of the blogs she links on her home page.
3. Catholic Girl in Sin City - I can relate.
4. Mission Improvisational - Can make buying a mattress into a hilarious tale!
5. You only live once - Small town girl who writes poetry. And her URL is "Making Bored People Mad" - how great is that?
6. Strange in the City - A lot like my blog actually...only this girl lives in NYC so there's a little more to write about.
**I wonder if the new generation even knows what that is?? Really, my teenage cousin asked me how those rotary phones worked once..
Whose Boobs Are Those??
...I asked Adam accusingly yesterday when I finally got around to downloading pics from my camera:

...Oh. They're mine.
I took this picture of myself in the mirror, so there were multiple attempts to avoid flash issues. The reason? You, my constant reader - I had a very funny story in mind for my blog. The splotch you see on my shirt was created when I was out "in the field" measuring cracks in concrete. (I often look at cracks, and enjoy cracking cracks about my crack attacks. Ha!)
So: My car was parked at a meter which was very close to running out so I hurriedly bent to measure, and logged the results. Apparently, each time I bent, my pen was pressed against my bosom and created the fashion statement I most often make: "I am a slob." I did this in the morning, so I got to walk around the office as people did double takes on my chest all day.
In the shower the next day, I realized that the stain went through to the skin.
Now, it is nearly two months later, and I was honestly confused as to why I had seven photos similar to this one on my camera. I guess I lost interest sometime after I arrived home from work. I am very good at starting things - but a little slow on the follow through. In fact,

....
I must apologize for my last entry. It seems my uncanny ability to offer witty witticisms is on vacation, and I have been experiencing writer's block. Luckily, I just had a wonderful piece of caramel banana cake, and I'm feeling better...
...ummmm.....anyone want to hear a joke??? (sound of crickets chirping)
really!! I'm interesting dammit!!

Steady....Wait For It...
I am trying SO hard to be good right now, but my stupid rice is stupidly NOT COOKING. I buy the brown rice because it is supposedly good for you, but it is consistently uncooked when I prepare it. This is because the other food cooks according to its instructions, while the rice does not. Normally, I am too impatient to wait it out, and I endure the comments from the peanut gallery regarding the "chewiness" of the rice. Today, it is still so hard, it is not edible, even though the water has evaporated and seconds ago, the smoke detector went off.
This is extremely dangerous to my fragile tummy. My friend made me banana cupcakes (thanks Maria!) which look delicious, and I want to eat them. I also want to eat some chips and salsa, some peanut butter bread, and a few almonds. I tried the counting thing again, with limited success (I had a few cherries and a strawberry and still haven't made it to 29.) I tried a glass of water, but my thoughts have wandered to me vittles, waiting for me to devour them.
So...here I am...blogging. So far this has been working....better go check on the rice again. But this is decidedly NOT the healthier option when you take into account the hundreds of calories consumed during this unbearable cooking time!!
